Designing "building décor materials" which make up our living spaces − Reproducibility and originality −

2025/07/30

There are two major elements in building décor materials design; one is reproducing the original natural materials and processed materials in a realistic and lively way, and the other is producing new expressions through the designer's creativity.
Also in the former case, elements of creativity are incorporated to a greater or lesser extent depending on the purpose.  It is not rare to combine or arrange the essence of materials to create a design that does not actually exist.  In this way, all designs are created by striking a balance between realistic reproduction and creativity.

TOPPAN is dedicated to researching materials to reflect research analysis on global space trends in real living spaces.  Behind these research lie countless stories surrounding materials, colors, and textures, and there are as many details as there are patterns.

[Point 01] Selecting from tens of thousands of materials

The materials that are incorporated into the surface design, such as wood, stone, metal, concrete, mortar, and textiles, are selected by the designers from a huge variety and quantity to suit the space and trends that it will be used in.  Taking oak wood as an example, we thoroughly check the grain pattern in detail from among thousands of different natural materials.  We scan carefully selected materials directly, so the characteristics of the materials are reproduced beautifully.  In cases where we want to create an aged look or a glossy finish, we may paint the material before scanning.

[Point 02] Pursuing colors that match the trends of the times

Regarding the colors of materials, we do not just reproduce the materials as they are, but also create colors that blend in with modern lifestyles and trends.
For example, while there are many variations in white and beige, we mix and match distinctive colors.  We test print multiple times while examining how well they coordinate with other materials in pursuit of the ideal color.

[Point 03] Expressing textures that appeal to the sense of touch

A crucial element in the finishing of surface design is a texture that appeals not only to the visual sense but also to the sense of touch.
By applying processing techniques such as embossing to printed decorative sheets, we can create a rich and exquisite texture, such as the fine feel of wood grain, the rugged and heavy feel of stone, or the smoothness of metal.  We will create specifications to suit the scene and purpose, taking into consideration factors such as coordination and durability.

As mentioned above, Toppan's building décor materials designs are supported by the ability to reproduce the real, live images of materials and unique creativity.  As we continue to improve our expressive power through technological innovation, it is essential that we sharpen our senses and maintain a rich sensibility.
We will continue to create building décor materials that add color to your life, drawing design inspiration not only from what we can see and touch, but also from everything that appeals to all of the senses.
Please look forward to future Toppan designs.
