Milan Salone 2026 Flash Report | "Luxury of Silence" Sought in a Confusing World

2026/06/22

The 64th Salone del Mobile was held in Milan, Italy, while the excitement of the Winter Olympic games was still in the air.  A total of 316,342 people from 167 countries visited, and 68% were from abroad.  This symbolized a world beginning to reconnect with strength.

On the other hand, the world still faces the shadows of “division” and “intolerance” caused by conflict, and people are worn down by information overload in daily life.  In this report, we will share three key points we noticed as a quick update.

Table of Contents

POINT 1: Silent Technology: Seeking "Timeless Value" in a Divided World
POINT 2: Connecting Spaces with Mirrors: Blurring Boundaries to Dialogue with the Exterior
POINT 3: Living with Art: A Rich, Layered Aesthetic

POINT 1: Silent Technology: Seeking "Timeless Value" in a Divided World

Now that the world is unstable, what we see in all brands is a shift from "temporary excitement" to "timeless stability" backed by high-quality craftsmanship.

B&B Italia, celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, quietly shows its high skills and great attention to detail.  Looking closely at the backrest of the chair, you can see delicate stitching that can only be done by hand.  To make this, thin slivers of natural cork are carefully wrapped around the core material, and then the fabric is sewn over it with perfect accuracy.  The natural elasticity of the cork provides an unquantifiable, nuanced comfort, while the exquisite tailoring imparts a look of refined elegance.

This approach resonates deeply with the human instinct to seek enduring value in uncertain times.  This "silent technology" is exactly how we define true luxury in 2026.

POINT 2: Connecting Spaces with Mirrors: Blurring Boundaries to Dialogue with the Exterior

The most strategically deployed element at this year's Salone was the mirror.  The methods seen at brands like Poliform and Poltrona Frau went beyond simple reflection; they used mirrors as an architectural approach.

At Poliform’s new flagship store, situated adjacent to the historic Teatro alla Scala, the striking, contemporary black-themed interiors are on full display.  To seamlessly integrate the brand's immersive universe with Milan's historic urban fabric, the ground-floor facade is entirely glazed, utilizing mirrors to pull the city directly into the showroom.  Rather than isolating the interior from the outside world, this layout dissolves physical boundaries, harmonizing the space with the streetscape.  Notably, an antiqued, slightly patinated finish was applied to the mirrors to echo the historic texture of the city—a crucial detail that softens the threshold between inside and out.

POINT 3: Living with Art: A Rich, Layered Aesthetic

As demonstrated by Molteni&C and ALCOVA, the seamless synthesis of architecture, art, and furniture has emerged as the new paradigm.

In turbulent times, there is a profound comfort found in historical layers.  Brands juxtaposed contemporary art and cutting-edge designs within raw, evocative spaces—such as historic palazzos with exposed walls—creating an immense depth through the dialogue between old and new.

Particularly at Villa Pestarini, a primary venue for ALCOVA, art transcended mere decoration, serving as the essential connective tissue linking furniture and architecture.

The weathered weight of historical structures and the refined, lightweight profiles of contemporary designs exist in different dimensions of texture and time.  Rather than a jarring juxtaposition, art is introduced as an eloquent bridge that reconciles both the eye and the mind.

While the Japanese interior design landscape has long revered the "aesthetic of subtraction" (minimalism), the future points toward a new direction: the strategic layering of diverse textures (CMF: Color, Material, and Finish), the curated inclusion of art, and the optical expansion of space through reflection.  This philosophy of "thoughtful addition" promises to gently enrich and nurture the lives within.
